Frequently Asked Questions about Reiki

There is a lot of misinformation about Reiki, so here are some of the most frequently asked questions I get. Have a question that’s not below? Please reach out!

What is Reiki?

The Japanese technique of Reiki promotes natural healing by emphasizing stress reduction and relaxation.  It is centered on the life force energy that lives within each of us.  We are more likely to suffer illness (physical and emotional) when our life energy is low.  Reiki helps to balance and increase this energy, resulting in relaxation and overall wellbeing.

The word "Reiki" is a combination of two powerful Japanese words: Rei translates to "spiritual" or "higher power". Ki refers to the life force energy.

How does Reiki Work?

Reiki is a natural form of alternative healing that treats the entire person, body, mind, and spirit. Because it has an holistic approach, you may see improvements in a variety of mental and physical conditions. Especially if your physical concerns are rooted in stress.

Reiki energy is already present within you, but by clearing stuck energy and increasing the overall flow of energy, I can help you move closer to your wellness goals.

Is Reiki a Religion?

No, Reiki has no religious affiliation.  There are practitioners with a variety of personal practices.  I have worked with clients of many faiths, and of no faith.  I am not doing any magic, or giving you anything that you do not already have within you.  We are simply working to enhance and increase the life force energy already flowing within you.  If you have questions about how my personal beliefs align with yours, please contact me so I can answer any questions you may have.

How is a Reiki Treatment Given?

I offer several types of Reiki treatments.

In-Person Session: I will use a combination of gentle touch and hovering hands to direct the flow of energy.  You will remain clothed throughout the session, resting on my treatment table (please wear comfortable clothing).  Most people experience blissful relaxation; some even fall asleep!  To best facilitate the movement of energy, drink plenty of water before and after your session.

Distance Session:  We will connect via Skype or Zoom.  Starting out with a short guided meditation, you will relax into a comfortable seated or reclined position, then we will find silence as I open the flow of energy.  At the end, I’ll bring you back and we will discuss what came up for you, as well as my insights.

Animal Reiki Session:  I’ll come to your home to reduce stress on the animal.  I only use touch if the animal initiates.  We will create an energetically calming space for the animal to relax, heal, and potentially share.

Can I use Insurance?

Unfortunately, Reiki is not covered by insurance.  If payment is a concern, please contact me and we can find a way to work with your budget.

Does Reiki replace my Primary Care Doctor or Specialist?

Reiki is a complimentary therapy, which means that I work WITH your doctor’s recommendations.  While we work together, you should continue to take all medications per your doctor’s instructions.  If/when your condition changes, you should revisit that with your doctor.

Can anyone become a Reiki Practitioner?

There are no special gifts required to practice Reiki, beyond a desire to commit yourself to your own healing process.  This source energy is present in every living being.  I am a Level 3 Master Teacher/Practitioner, and if you are interested in studying the system of Reiki, I would love to chat with you and learn how I can help you on your journey.

Does a treatment drain the practitioner?

A lot of clients ask me if I’m exhausted after a session from giving them my energy or from taking on their energy.  Luckily, Reiki doesn’t work like that!  Because the energy is flowing THROUGH me, instead of FROM me, I get to enjoy some of the energetic bliss you feel during a session.  And any energetic releases you have, move through me and straight out into the universe - to wherever it’s meant to be.
